A synopsis of our planning on MSN...
Title: Duality
Character: Cassiopeia Black
Backstory: Cassiopeia was a squib, but her family hoped that she might just be a little latent. She knew, however, that she wouldn't have magic. She searched desperately for a way to gain her magic so that she wasn't a disappointment. Somehow, she stumbled upon the Lycan legends.
Lycans are a rare and powerful breed of werewolf that aren't cursed. They can change forms at will (we also toyed with the idea of them having a smaller, wolf-like form, and the larger battle model). To become a Lycan, one must embrace the Change from the beginning.
Because they embraced the wolf, they are not forced to transform on Full Moons, but most choose to, as they develop illnesses from a lack of transformations, and sometimes lose their natural control over the wolf. They can transform into their werewolf form at any time, like an animagus, but suffer from excruciating pain whence they return to their human form if this is attempted by day (the length of time before the pain wears off is determined by the length of time they stay in the Form, as is the intensity).
There are ten Lycans in Britain (Cassiopeia is one of them). They are the Alphas of their own Packs, which include every werewolf that's created by them or members of their Pack. Like Native American tribes, each holds to the central werewolf themes but have their own twists on them, and have their own legends and customs.
The creation of a new Lycan is rare, but when it occurs there is generally a tingly, anxious feeling among the Lycans - who have their own Court to call for such things, as well as their own Pack consisting only of Lycans - and a waning in the central power that allows them natural control of the wolf. Each also builds up their own power by absorbing the spells of others.
((Fell free to add, Yinster.))
