Title: Stronger Than Hope
Author: Alaunatar
Rating: M (Mature)
Type: Gen (no pairing)
Warnings: None
Length: 161,678 words (novel)
Complete
The author is a master story-teller. I have rarely read a story where the characters were so well thought out and so well-developed. Her Snape is canon, and one of the best representation I have seen. He is a nasty, self-serving bastard, but by the end of the story I had enormous admiration, respect, and yes…even fondness for him. And she does the same type of "transformation" with Harry. He starts the story as one type of individual, and ends the story as another. But it is not simple. Both characters are incredibly complex and believable.
This is NOT a light story, but it did not push any of my squick
buttons. It is however, unsettling, intelligent, thought-provoking,
and heart-breaking. But the journey is worth it.
This is the type of writing that wins awards.
Notes from the author: AU after OoTP, a few HBP details. An obsessed, grieving Harry has decided on a dangerous way to defeat Voldemort. Snape is paying closer attention than before, but his contempt for Harry blinds him. Eventual Snape as Harry's guardian story.
Rated For: Suicidal thoughts and discussions of suicide attempts, violence, adult language, and Snape being a bastard. (I mean it; he's really not nice in this story at first, and won't be for a long time.) No sex, as there are no pairings. The title comes from a Ted Hughes poem called "Examination at the Womb-Door"—"Who is stronger than hope? Death."
