The boggart began to shift, its formless body changing into the embodiment of Mercy’s worst fear. Everyone in the room either gasped, or stared in confusion at the revelation. Mercy looked into her own eyes, looked upon her own face, her lips, which were smirking. The sleeves of her robe were cut short, and revealed a tattoo on her left forearm, an snake twined through a skull.
“Hullo Meri,” the Boggart-Mercy purred, her voice deeper and colder.
The copy drew a wand, her eyes flickering to the tattoo, where Mercy’s eyes were fixated.
“Yeah, look,” she whipped the wand in a tight circle, pointing it at one of her classmates. “Look at this power. It’s beautiful.”
Mercy watched a jet of red light shoot towards the boy, who hit the ground, writhing in agony. Mercy whimpered, her body language was screaming fear, and her eyes were glazed, as though she weren’t seeing the room around her.
“Watch me, watch you!” Boggart-Mercy cried, laughing, “Watch my power!”
“R-ridiculus!” Mercy ordered weakly.
“Too weak, Meri,” Boggart-Mercy said in a sing-song voice. “Too weak. Can’t protect, can’t kill, can’t do anything! I bet you won’t even be able to pick yourself up when someone stops me for you!”
“R…” she tried again. “R-ridiculus!”
Nothing happened, and more and more of her classmates were hitting the ground, screaming, writhing or blank-eyed. Mercy backed away, her brown eyes wide and tear-filled. She was shaking and her wand trembled so badly that even if she could muster the strength to do something, her wand would have thrown the spell off completely.
Boggart-Mercy turned her wand on Remus, who was staring at her, Mercy, accusingly. Something silver and sharp-looking shot out of Boggart-Mercy’s wand, it stabbed into his arm, and he paled, a strangled cry escaping his throat. He began to shiver, a livid burn working its way up his arm.
“Ridiculus!” a strong voice snapped.
The Boggart-Mercy stopped, looking at her wand, which had turned into a slap-stick. The robes changed to rainbow, and the snake-and-skull tattoo changed into a rainbow with the words “I Joined Voldemort’s Mardi Gras” under the arc. The class, now mysteriously back on their feet and watching her, laughed at the image.
Mercy looked at Tabitha, who was breathing unsteadily, with her wand directed at the Boggart, which was Shifting again. The other girl gave her a small smile, and turned to face her own fears.
Mercy tried to stand, and burst into quiet tears as she realised that she’d been right, she couldn’t stand, she was… too weak.
