The sun was setting outside, painting the slow, lazy river gold. Limestone steps led up from the muddy bank, giving way to stepping stones that traversed the thick and slightly overgrown backyard.
Ivy climbed up the lattice on either side of a pale blue door. A few feet away, the stepping stones became steps once more, giving prelude to the back entrance of the old Victorian.
Light shown off the hallway, streaming out onto the slightly worn carpet from a large room. Inside, Fiona sat at an overlarge writing desk, finishing up the last sentence on a long letter that stretched out before her.
She cast a glance over her shoulder, gauging the light still coming in from the outside, before hurriedly folding the bulky letter and stuffing it into an envelope. Without second thought, she sealed it, and set it back on the desk. Picking up a regular ink pen, she scrawled a name across the outside of the envelope.
“Melani”
She smiled slightly, before crossing to the window facing the backyard. Flinging it open, she set her eyes on the horizon, waiting.
Not long thereafter, a familiar-looking speck came into her field of vision, and she grinned bigger than ever. She waited impatiently, tapping the window frame and bouncing on her heels, but never once did she break eye-contact with the speck that was slowly becoming an owl.
Finally, what seemed like an eternity later, the medium-sized tawny owl landed on the window sill, shaking its feathers by way of greeting and sticking out its leg.
Fiona untied the bulky envelope, grinned at it for a moment, and used the same string to tie her own onto the owl's leg. She stroked it's head a few times, offered it a treat and some water, and set it off again.
She held close to the letter, but didn't open it. Nor did she move from her post at the window, however, opting to stay for just a bit longer, watch the sun set on 31 August, on the last day of Summer.
