“Ugh,” Anna climbed out of the passenger seat and drew the hood up on her running jacket, covering her head and glaring at the rain. “I hate this town.”
Abby sat in the car a moment longer, shivered slightly, and then followed suit. “Mm," she agreed, “It’s very hate-able. ‘The Immaculate Conception Church’, seriously.”
“And it's very wet, to boot.” Anna leaned back into the car and jerked the passenger seat forward, gaining access to the trunk-like space behind. She pulled out a small bag and set it in the floor, pushing the seat back into place. Abby did the same, though her bag was slightly more weighty.
“Yes, there is that." Abby made a face. “I am going to take an impossibly long bath, then an impossibly long nap, and then I’m going to look into the possibility of taking the car to Wellington to get whatever’s making that noise fixed.” She crossed the parking lot as she spoke, fiddling with the door to the motel room and finally getting it to open.
Anna followed her inside, claiming one of the beds as her own by flinging her bag onto it and sitting on the edge. “Oh. Well, you have fun doing that. Do you s’pose think you can fit the hunt into that ingaging schedule of yours?” she looked mildly amused.
“Of course, what do you think I’m going to do while the car’s getting fixed?”
“You have this all planned out, then.”
Abby dug around in her bag, pulling out four bottles and heading into the bathroom. “Yes, I do. Anyway. Bath." She flashed Anna a grin before disappearing into the stark white bathroom and shutting the door.
A little over an hour later, the door opened again and steam poured out into the main area of the small room. Abby crossed to her bag, one towel wrapped around her head and the other around herself, and dug out some clothes. Returning to the bathroom, she dressed quickly.
“Did you leave any hot water?”
“Yes. Well, at least I think I did." She tidied up the bathroom and returned to her bed, slumping against her headboard and snuggling into her covers with a small contented noise. Anna was the next to take the bathroom, greatful that Abby had left her some water. When she emerged, Abby was already asleep, making the strange little noises that Anna had already gotten used to.

Anna glanced at the map of south Kansas, guestimating on the time it would take to reach Wellington. Abby was just stirring, stretching like a cat and yawning.
“Whatime issit?” she asked blearily, sitting up and rubbing her eyes like a five-year-old.
“Nearly ten in the morning. You weren’t kidding when you said impossibly long."
“Ack, sorry.” She untangled herself from the covers and swung her feet over, checking the small, old-fashioned alarm clock to make sure that Anna was right.
“Eh. It’s fine. I was just looking at the map. It’ll take you about an hour and a half to reach Wellington. S’not far.”
“Mm," Abby stretched again, pulling out her bag from where she had stashed it under the bed and heading towards the bathroom to get dressed. Anna took this as a cue to do the same.
“What're you going to do while I’m away?" Abby asked a few moments later looking impossibly clean.
“Oh, just going to look into some of the records and stuff. The usual." She shrugged, handing the other girl the map.
“Right. I want to get this done as quickly as possible, so I’m going to go ahead and head out. Want me to take you to the library?” Anna nodded, and they left the room. The car was still wet, the moisture beading over the recent paint job, but the clouds were receeding somewhat. In any case, the town didn't look as dreary as it had yesterday afternoon.
Abby grinned, hoping that she could actually ride with the top down today. It made the car seem bigger, even though it would probably fit in the back of some of the larger van models. Though, as she reconsidered, the nose might be a bit long. She shrugged mentally and started across the parking lot.
Anna tapped her on the shoulder, nodding to the far end of the parking lot.
The same long black-four door that she had spotted yesterday gleamed from its stationary spot, the layer of dirt removed with the washing-away of the rain. Abby frowned at it.
“That’s not normal," Anna stated, still looking at it as though it might warrant some hidden secret if she did it long enough.
“No, indeed. Well, you were right about it not belonging.” She catalogued it in the back of her mind, but wasn’t really worried. There were plenty of muscle cars hanging around the country, it wasn’t as though it meant something was wrong. Still, she knew what Anna was thinking. She was thinking that it had something to do with the hunt, that maybe whatever was killing the nuns drove late-60s model black four-doors.
She shrugged it off and got into the car. Anna hesitated a moment, before following. She still looked uneasy.
Abby hadn’t slept well at all the previous night, not that she really expected to with this itch manifesting itself beneath her skin. They had to solve this one before long, or she was going to go insane. Anna kept an eye on the strange car all the way out of the parking lot, and Abby bet that if she asked, Anna would have known the license plate by heart.
“Where is the library, anyway?” she asked a few moments later, realizing that she might be going the wrong way.
“Dunno,” Anna said, “Though I bet it’ll be where all the other official-looking buildings are." She pointed out of the windshield to a circle of buildings that were taller than the others, and Abby turned onto the beaten road that she guessed led there. “There,” she concluded after a moment, pointing at a squat white building nestled behind what Abby guessed was the Courthouse.
“Ah. Here we are," she pulled up alongside it, “I guess I’ll see you later then?”
Anna nodded and got out of the car, starting up the steps that led to the doors. Abby waited until she was inside, before pulling away and glancing at the map, glad to be getting out of this freakish town if only for a little while.
